portaPuTTY

portaPuTTY is a hacked version of PuTTY that stores all its information in files, not in the registry. I made this version so I could have a good SSH client to run from a USB drive.

Other than that, it’s the PuTTY you know and love.

Torrents: Binary and source

You can get the binaries here. The source is also available, if you want it.

Keep in mind that I haven’t gone through this thing with a fine toothed comb yet, so it may still use the registry somewhere. Feel free to send any comments along.

If you find portaPuTTY useful, I appreciate donations to my good sushi dinner fund.

Known Issues: Font information isn’t stored properly. A patch has been submitted. As soon as I check it and some other fixes out I’ll put out a new release. I’ve been planning to do this any day now for the past 2 months. I’ll try to get to it soon.

  66. Stefan Says:

    Hi,
thank you for making putty portable. That’s really cool :-)

One thing I find a bit difficult. The config-directory .putty is always created in the current directory. That means that if you use putty/plink mainly from commandline of batchfile (I do that) the you have lots of “.putty”s on the USB-stick and local harddisk.

That will lead to having diffent sets of config-data and hostkey stored in different contexts, depending on the working directory. It also means that putty has to be reconfigured every time it is started with a new working directory.

And (this seems like a problem to me) if you happen to be “portable” and are working on the local harddrive you leave the config-directory on the computer, meaning you “change it”. If you happen to be in C:\ you can even expect some inquisitive questions from the local admin.

IMHO it would be better if .putty was always created in the same directory. That would probably be the directory where the executable resides.

    regards,
    Stefan

  67. stefan Says:

    Hi,

“normal” putty has a commandline-option -cleanup which deletes all references to putty from the registry.

For portaputty it would IMO be a good idea to have that option clean up too, meaning delete the directory .putty _and_ do its old job, meaning delete anything from the registry that has been left by previous uses of the original putty.

At the moment -cleanup does not seem to do anything.

    Stefan

  69. John Santos Says:

I would just want to say “THANKS” to Matthew Mastracci and to Bryan L. Fordham for finally fixing the font bug on this very excellent little program.

Also, Bryan, it isn’t clear that you have actually updated your version to fix the font bug. I realised that it was updated only when I read Matthew Mastracci’s comments on his version, on his site.

Perhaps a small update at the top of the PortaPuTTY page?

For those of you that have read this far and, like me, already have an old version of PortaPuTTY downloaded before 31 of August 2006, then redownload it to get the font fixed version. Bryan’s PortPuTTY home page has not been updated, but the program itself has.

Once again, THANKS to all involved.

  70. James Says:

Hi, thanks for making putty portable. My use of it usually from the commandline with putty.exe in the PATH. That unfortunately results in a new directory .putty under every directory I happen to be in when I start putty. Is there some way to get putty to always leave its profile in the same place? (without having to use a batchfile or a .LNK) ?
    THX, james

  71. James Says:

    Hi Guys,

    thanks for the effort.

You have the most complete and most developed version of portable putty, but sadly so far I cannot use it because .putty-directories keep popping up everywhere, including the harddisk.

Please drop me a short note to my email on whether the default-dir for .putty will be put in a fixed location, e.g. the directory of the executable.

If you do not plan to change the default-directory then please let me know, then I won’t have to wait around and can try some other solution.

[…] You know, for a long time I wanted a way to carry putty a free opensource ssh client around with me on a pendrive.  Putty will run off a memory stick but it leaves entries in the registry of the computer you’re working on.  These reg entries are necessary as those are your settings for the sites you log into, along with any tunnels you’ve set up.  This isn’t good though if you work on public or shared computers, as I sometimes do.  So I searched and found a way to put together some batch scripts that would add my settings to the registry, launch putty, and once I exit putty it would clean up the registry, erasing what sites I’ve visited and what keys were used. This still wasn’t ideal as it could lead to leaked information being left behind if something went wrong.  Which it sometimes did if Windows drop my pendrive for some reason.  What I needed was a portable ssh client that ran off a pendrive that stored it’s settings locally.  Wouldn’t it be great if putty would do this?  I do so love putty.  Low and behold some kind soul took the time and answered my prayers.  Thank you.  Portable Putty stores the settings locally, runs from a usb memory stick, and is Putty.  Awesome!
